Reclaim Tecoma from McDonald's
'Creating A Community Garden ... 1'
14 October 2012
Facebook : No Maccas in the Hills
Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has shown contempt for community opposition and local democracy by approving a new McDonald's in Tecoma in the Dandenong Ranges (Victoria, Australia). The Hills people showed McDonald's that it is the community who controls our public spaces not the corporation with the deepest pockets! On October 14, hundreds of people came together set up a new 'community garden' in Tecoma on the site. The Community brought plants, placards, gardening tools and a fighting spirit. It is time to take back their community - the fight has only just began.

Press Release 15th October 2012 - 6.25 PM - From No Maccas In The Hills :
Developer moves to evict anti-Maccas Community Garden in Tecoma
The ongoing community struggle against the proposed Tecoma McDonalds is rapidly moving towards a new level of confrontation. In a statement of defiance against the VCAT hearing approving the development on the 10/10/2012, the community on Sunday in their hundreds participated in constructing a community garden on the land of the developer Joel Freeman.
This afternoon, Joel Freeman attended the site of the garden with police who issued a formal notice of trespass. Word was received from police that there are plans to erect a security fence around the site tomorrow. A group of around 50 protestors on the site tonight vowed to turn up in force tomorrow to non-violently defend the garden and continue their resistance to the construction of a McDonalds. No confirmation of a time of the construction of the fence is available.
The local community is furious that VCAT has shown so little regard for local democracy. Over 1000 objections to the development were made to Council and the Council rejected the proposal unanimously. Three hundred community submissions were then made to VCAT against McDonalds in Tecoma. All of this has been disregarded. The community is determined that VCAT, the developer and McDonalds will not ride roughshod over their democratic will.
